Understanding the “Error Creating Model” Message

When SAP TM VSR shows “Error Creating Model,” the optimizer has stopped before it can even create a transportation plan. The visible message is only the symptom. The real issue is usually incorrect, missing, or inconsistent planning data that prevents SAP TM from building a valid optimization model.

For transportation teams, this can quickly become a business problem: planners lose time investigating failed runs, manual planning increases, and the planning cycle becomes harder to manage when transportation requirements change.

In the cases SCM Champs has handled, the underlying issue has included invalid location or hub assignments, incorrect stop data, missing calculation-base settings, inconsistent Freight Unit data, and broken object references.

Think of it like a GPS. If the address itself is invalid, the GPS cannot calculate the route. SAP TM’s VSR optimizer works in a similar way: if the planning data is not valid, it cannot build the model needed for optimization.

Problem the Client Was Facing

The client was using the SAP TM VSR Optimizer to automate transportation planning. But optimization runs kept failing with an “Error Creating Model” message on screen.

Instead of getting an optimized transport plan, planners had to stop and investigate the failure. Many days they gave up and planned by hand. This delayed the whole planning cycle and made it hard to react when transportation requirements changed.

[Scale detail: roughly 4,000 freight units per day, 350 locations, dispatch cutoff at 14:00.]

What Was Causing the Problem?

Before the optimizer can find the best routes, it first has to build a model — a clean internal picture of your locations, freight, resources and time windows. If any part of that picture is wrong or missing, the model cannot be built. The run stops before optimization ever begins.

When SCM Champs investigated, we found problems spread across the data feeding the model:

Invalid or inconsistent location and hub assignments
• Incorrect stop-related information
• Missing or unsupported calculation-base settings
• Inconsistent Freight Unit and object data
• Invalid references introduced through additional modeling relationships

The important part: the “Error Creating Model” message you see on screen is only the symptom. The actual cause sits in the detailed optimizer logs and in the underlying SAP TM master and transactional data. The screen tells you that it failed. RCC_LOG tells you why.

One pattern worth knowing: if the optimizer worked yesterday and fails today with nothing obviously changed, look at what data is new. A new location, a new lane, or a new resource added without validation is one of the most common triggers.

How SCM Champs Solved the Problem

We traced the failure back to the exact data objects that were blocking the model from being created. The approach was structured, not trial and error:

Read the VSR optimizer logs to get the detailed model-creation error, not just the screen message.

Traced the affected object IDs and locations back to their SAP TM master and planning data.

Validated locations, stops, Freight Units, resources and related configuration for inconsistencies.

Corrected the invalid data and configuration causing the failure.

Re-ran the optimization to confirm the model built successfully and planning could proceed.

Reviewed the underlying setup to reduce the chance of the same failure returning.

The fix was not to keep re-running the optimizer and hoping. It was to find and correct the data that was stopping SAP TM from building the model in the first place.

The Result

[Optimizer runs completing successfully instead of failing at model creation. Manual planning fallback eliminated. Planning cycle back to 2 hours. Number of failed runs per week dropped from 12 to 0.]

[1
7,302
post-2019","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sap-fixes","tag-sap-tm","tag-sap-tm-optimization
["GET
